Welcome!
This is the front page of COGS8 (W07) ZWiki. It is designed to support discussion among students and the instructors, beyond what can happen during face2face class periods.
The various conversational "threads" will grow with the class, but a few topics can be anticipated. Try to keep your postings on these threads if they seem relevant, but don't be shy about starting new topics!

electronics in the arts exhibit --h2ly, Tue, 13 Mar 2007 13:47:07 -0800 reply
Wednesday, March 21st, 7pm. Key ideas:
1-Using analog signals (light, sound, motion, etc) to create a paper/rock/scissors behavior, instead of potentially more complex, expensive, less tangible technologies.
2-Using an "inverse proportion" scheme. What this means is that each type of input reduces another type of output. The more Rock, the less Scissors, the more Scissors, the less Paper, etc. The more Light, the less Sound, etc.
3-And the unproven theory: This type of scheme will create a self-balancing "ecosystem" of sorts. Each type of output will keep the other types of output in check. When left to their own devices, the three will find some kind of harmony in which all three outputs will occur at some regular intensity or interval (though it may not be perfectly balanced between all three).
4-Finally, a participant of the piece could step into this process at any of its three junctions (light, sound, motion), creating visible (and audible) disturbances in the "natural" harmony that would reverberate through the "ecosystem" in not-entirely-predictable ways.

Electronics in the Arts II exhibit is at 8pm, not 7pm. Same location: CALIT2 - Multipurpose room - look for Jellyfishes.
..you can still show up at 7pm, but we may still be setting up and documenting the project!
I'm not spamming, am I? --h2ly, Thu, 15 Mar 2007 15:29:03 -0800 reply
OPENING NIGHT: Friday, March 16th, 2007 6 pm to 9 pm with
reception
When: March 16 - 22, 2007 3 to 6 pm
Where: CalIT2? in one of the reconfigurable labs. Look for signs and postcards after you get past the cement bear.
What: The Senior ICAM 160B graduating class of Steve Boyer is presenting in a gallery space for one week. This is unusual as most senior projects are presented in a virtual gallery space on the internet, a website, you tube or just within the class. They have done a great job and many of the pieces are highly interactive. Stop by and wish them well as they graduate and head off to jobs, graduate schools and teaching programs.
