Graduate Positions

One of the requirements for the Ph.D. in Cognitive Science is "participation in departmental events and committees." In addition to attending various talks (thesis defenses, project talks, visiting speakers, etc.) and special events (orientations, receptions, and luncheons with visiting students and researchers), graduate students contribute to the life of the department by serving in the following positions:

  • Meet regularly with the Department Chair to discuss the graduate curriculum and requirements, course offerings, financial support, teaching assistantships, facilities and technology, and other issues of importance to graduate students.

  • Handle office placements for incoming graduate students.

  • Arranges for the speaker to have lunch with graduate students at the Faculty Club, to meet with individual students or faculty, to present a public lecture, and to attend a post-lecture reception

  • Assists the speaker with travel arrangements and technology needs

The "wa," derived from the Japanese term for social harmony, is a weekly brownbag lunch event for graduate students and interested faculty, intended to promote intellectual interchange and help foster a sense of community within the department. During the "wa," students, faculty, and visitors talk about current research.

  • Schedules speakers, rooms and equipment.
