IGERT Fellow Course and Lab Rotation Requirements

All IGERT fellows are required to take certain specified courses and to participate in lab rotations as part of their fellowship.   These requirements are explained below.

Course Requirements

Fellows are required to take five courses as part of the IGERT program.   There are two "track" options from which fellows choose one.

Track 1 ("Vision") :

•  One "computer vision" course from the following options:   CSE 252A or CSE252B

•  The following "human vision" course: Psych 221

•  The "Vision Seminar" (This course will be co-taught by IGERT faculty specializing in computer vision and human vision.)

•  One Track 2 course chosen from the "machine learning" or "human learning" course options.

•  "Ethics and Survival Skills in Academia": COGS / NEU / PATH 241

Track 2 ("Learning") :

•  One "machine learning" course from the following options: CSE 250B, CSE 253, CSE 254, ECE 285, or COGS 260 (only when it is offered a machine learning course)

•  One "human learning" course from the following options: COGS 213, COGS 215, or COGS 260 (only when it is offered as a human learning course)

•  The "Learning Seminar" (This course will be co-taught by IGERT faculty specializing in machine learning and human learning.)

•  One Track 1 course chosen from the "computer vision" or "human vision" course options.

•  "Ethics and Survival Skills in Academia": COGS / NEU / PATH 241

Lab Rotation Requirements

Fellows are required to participate in two or three quarters of lab rotations. Two quarters of lab rotations will be sufficient when both rotations have significant effort associated with them. Three quarters of lab rotations are required for simple rotations such as attending the AI seminar and attending lab meetings.

  • At least one quarter must be spent in a lab outside of the fellow's home department.
  • A fellow will receive a maximum rotation credit of one quarter per home-department lab.
  • Two quarters of rotation credit can be earned in the same lab if it is outside of the fellow's home department.

It is not always possible to formally sign up for a lab rotation in all departments so our new working policy is that any form of research or regular contact (outside of regular courses) with a faculty member can count as a lab rotation as long as it is documented with Beverley. Please send Beverley information on any activity you wish to document as a lab rotation and have the relevant faculty member send Beverley a brief email confirming the activity and level of involvement. Activity before you were a fellow can be used (just as relevant course work completed before your fellowship).

Possible lab rotation activities include:

  • writing a paper with a faculty member that is more than course work.
  • attending lab meetings for a quarter (or less regularly for a year)
  • being involved in a cross-lab project or paper
  • formally signing up for (and passing) a lab rotation
  • attending and participating in the AI seminar for a quarter if you are
  • not an AI/ML student

Please note that at least one quarter must be spent outside your home department. The outside home department rules can be waived for students rotating in a very different area in the same Department -- this is especially relevant for students in the Cognitive Science Department.
