National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowship

The National Defense Science & Engineering Graduate Fellowship ( provides three-year graduate fellowships to students in fifteen disciplines. The fellowship provides tuition and fees, a health insurance allowance, and a stipend of over $30,000 each year.

“As a means of increasing the number of U.S. citizens and nationals trained in science and engineering disciplines of military importance, the Department of Defense (DoD) plans to award approximately 200 new three-year graduate fellowships in April 2012, subject to the availability of funds. The DoD will offer these fellowships to individuals who have demonstrated the ability and special aptitude for advanced training in science and engineering.”


1) US citizen or national

2) intend to pursue a doctoral degree

3) At or near the beginning of doctoral studies, defined as

  -being enrolled in your final year of undergraduate studies,


  -having completed less than two full-time years of graduate study in the discipline in which you are applying

4) Field of study fits under one of the following fifteen disciplines:
       Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering
       Chemical Engineering
       Civil Engineering
       Cognitive, Neural, and Behavioral Sciences
       Computer and Computational Sciences
       Electrical Engineering
       Materials Science and Engineering
       Mechanical Engineering
       Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering
