Cognitive Science Student Association

Welcome to the 2012-13 Cognitive Science Student Association!

This is going to be quite an exciting year for the CSSA.

This year we’re going to send regular newsletters with CSSA events, job & research opportunities, and cogsci-related happenings in the San Diego area. If email is not your cup of tea, that’s fine - these messages will be posted to the Facebook group as well. The best way to keep up to date with all CSSA related information is to regularly visit our website: (it’s currently being updated from the previous year).

The first event coming up is a Cogsci Class Q&A and Textbook Exchange on Thursday, Oct. 4, from 5-7pm in CSB 114. This meetup is for anyone who wants to find out if they’re taking the right cogsci classes and for those who want to buy/sell textbooks for those classes.

Next, don’t miss the First General Body Meeting of Fall 2012-13 on Wednesday, Oct. 10 (second week), from 8-9pm in CSB 005. We’re going to talk about the exciting events and opportunities for CSSA members this year. And I’m telling you, this is going to be a good year. Come to the GBM to find out why.

A week later - Wednesday, Oct. 17, from 6:00-9:30pm - we’re going to have our traditional, beginning-of-the-term Bonfire at La Jolla Shores. Meet at Peterson Loop at 5:30pm (we’re leaving at 5:45-5:50pm) for a ride down to wonderful La Jolla Shores where we’ll be enjoying good food, friends, and probably brain-related conversation. This is a potluck, but the CSSA will bring stuff for hot-dogs, grilled pineapple, and smores. You should go to on principle since you’re a college student and we’re giving you free food.

The last event for the month of October, on Oct. 24th, tentatively from 6:00-7:30, is a Dinner with the Professor, where the CSSA will take a professor out to dinner so you can pick their brains. The professor in question is TBD; we’ll alert you on the specifics as soon as we have them.

But wait, there’s more!

Starting this year, the CSSA will be collaborating with, a brand new social network startup from UC Berkeley centered on generating humorous content. This site is like tumlbr-meets-reddit for people who like to make people laugh.

And you like making people laugh, right? Because YOU will be among the few student orgs in the UC’s (let alone the nation) to have first access to the awesomeness that is! Huzzah!

We’re welcoming into the CSSA with a
contest to find out who has the funniest brain in the bunch! Starting this Monday (Oct. 1) to the first GBM (Wednesday Oct. 10), I want you to compete with your fellow CSSA members to post the funniest content on the site.

The top three people with the most curio votes and most funny comments shall be given the greatest prizes there are: Pride. Glory. Bragging rights saying you’re the cleverest kids in the cogsci club. And free “I Brain Cognitive Science” T-Shirts.

The invite code is “cssa”. After you log in, join the Cognitive Science Student Association group by going to your profile page and clicking “Find Your Group.” Make sure once you’re logged in you join this group or else we’ll have no way of telling how hilarious you are. The winner will be announced at in the first General Body Meeting.

And don’t hold back the hilarity, for we need champions in comedy to help us compete in a month-long, campus-wide contest to recruit the most members to The student org that brings over the most members will be awarded a $1,000 cash prize! This second competition will start Oct. 15 and will last a month.

Well, this was quite a long email; I really appreciate you reading this all the way through. I hope to meet you at the first GBM or other events throughout the year.

-Alex Rosengarten, CSSA President
